the design of loss

October 2, 2008

A colleague of mine came to me with a request to work on a very special project. Two years ago, her son died in a car accident at the age of eighteen. Support for her family was tremendous in her tight-knit community and she wished that they could have some sort of symbol or graphic that could represent her son to be used on thank you notes and when scholarship fundraisers were held. She asked that I include a few things (a lacrosse stick, fishing pole & dragonfly) that are symbolic of who her son was and the things he loved most.

Although I'm pleased with the result, I can't help feeling nervous about delivering them to her tomorrow.

I wish I knew what to say... but I never do.

Honestly, what can you say?

Beautiful design. It seems to capture what you set out to do. Sometimes there are not words. A hug and sincerity goes a long way.

Thanks to both of you for your kind words. It went well and I got a chance to learn more about a beautiful woman and her amazing son.

And I cried a little bit too.

You created a really beautiful design. Simple, classic and meaningful. I am sure your friend will find this perfect. This was a difficult assignment for you, but I think youdid a great job.

What an amazing tribute to a young life. Beautiful, simple and classy, like pretty much all your work. No words are needed, I think you said it all (and very appropriately i might add) with this design. Nice work (and here's a ((hug)) for you too.)
