do good things | make someone's day

October 1, 2008

A few weeks ago, my father-in-law was in the hospital. I told Samson that I thought we should send his Papa a little something to help him feel better. He said, "when I'm sick, I feel better when I have my toys and LaLa" (his very dirty and much loved little lamb blanket). And with that, he decided that Papa should have the same.

He got to work on deciding on a toy to "donate" (I'm pretty sure he thinks it's just out on loan) and he chose to send one of his Batman figures (one that he REALLY loves to play with). But since there was no way Samson would part with the real LaLa, he wanted to make Papa his very own (from a cloth napkin he found). He made him a card and we packaged it all up together.

I can't begin to tell you how proud I was of him and (more importantly) how proud he was of himself. It's such a gift to know that you've done something kind for someone and it's even better when you can share that gift with your child.

So go ahead. It's Wednesday (what else is going on?). Send a note or your own favorite toy to someone who might need a little extra love. Wrap it in the prettiest ribbon you can find. Make someone's day. Better yet, help a child to. There's nothing better. Really.

Thanks Mandy-- I'll let him know. He could use the encouragement :)

I know you posted this a long time ago but I'm just now seeing it. I wanted to also add my kudos to your son's thoughtfulness and, more importantly, to YOU for apparently raising a child with such kindness and compassion. Good job!

(I think mom's don't hear "good job" enough.)
